  1. I found the first two long stories a bit of a let down, in terms of outside actions influencing the novel and making it less about detection. The short stories though are fantastic. A great romp around London and the surrounding area is this.

  2. Although I may be somewhat biased, as I love almost anything Holmes related, I do see your point. Being the first stories of the entire series Doyle seems to have not yet settled on his successful Holmesian formula. Nevertheless, I do still enjoy reading of their first meeting in A Study in Scarlet.
